For SEO, there are no guarantees, even for the deepest of pockets. Once you think you’ve cracked it, Google changes the rules again. Common deceptions are:

  • Showing you pay per click listings and pretending they are natural
  • Getting you top for your brand name / site domain (this is 100% certainty)
  • Getting you top for a phrase which no-one searches for (usually too long or containing a misspell)

Always, always, always avoid a business who talks a lot about SEO, but never covers anything to do with your website – this is a definite give-away.

The way to avoid this is to communicate, document and receive a commitment for all your project requirements from the agency in question. Then make a full assessment of their current experience – if you know an independent voice who can help, we thoroughly recommend you use an adviser.

Beware the agency that claims skills in all areas, will always say ‘yes we can do that’ and yet struggle to deliver value and performance for you. Make sure you check first, and check again – do they have the skills they claim: where is the evidence? Where are the testimonials? Take references not just for the website, but also whatever you’ve appointed them to do.

Behind the scenes they could be scrabbling this way and that to find freelancers, other agencies, unknown offshore suppliers and all sorts of sources to fulfil your requirements – but our guess is that it wouldn’t be a very good job once it’s done!
